What is monoblock paving?
Monoblock is another name for individual paving blocks laid together to make a driveway or path. Different block shapes, colours and patterns change the look. For a driveway, both the blocks and the base need to support the weight of cars.

Choose a paving pattern you like
Herringbone is a zigzag pattern often used on driveways. Blocks can also be laid in offset rows, like bricks in a wall. A simple pattern can work well on a small drive, with a different colour around the edge to make the border stand out.

Drainage and looking after your blocks
Some block paving is designed to let rainwater soak through the gaps. This is called permeable paving, and it needs the right blocks and base underneath. Other paving needs a separate way for water to drain. Sweeping, removing weeds and keeping the gaps filled help care for the surface.

Block paving questions

Can you replace just a few blocks?
Individual blocks can usually be lifted and replaced for small repairs or to reach pipes underneath. New blocks may look different from older paving that has faded or weathered.
Does block paving need looking after?
Yes. Sweep away leaves and dirt, remove weeds and keep the gaps between blocks filled as recommended. Follow the paving maker’s cleaning advice so you do not damage the surface or wash out the filling.
